The Silent Era (1990 – 1930)

In 1900, James Stuart Blackton created “The Enchanted Drawing”, which he used animation techniques to produce a short film. This drawing was a face which then reacted to various things the artist did using stop-motion. J. Blackton was named the father of animation, as this was the very first instance of animated video.

The first official animated film , ” Fantasmagorie” was produced by a Frenchman named Emile Cohl. It was very well taken by audience and it today known as the first true animated film.

Created by Windsor McCay, the ” Gertie the Dinosaur” was a short animation film, today considered as the first animated character to have appealing and distinctive character traits. This Animation led to the creation of other popular animated stars, including, “Felix the Cat” by Otto Mesmer, “Koko the Clown” by the Fleischer brothers, ” Bobby Bumps” and “Colonel Heeza Liar” by Bray Productions, and “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit”, designed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks.
